HYMEN
REPAİR, HYMENOPLASTY, VİRGİNİTY RESTORATİON
Hymen repair, or hymenoplasty,
virginity restoration is a simple operation
which involves the surgical repair of the torn hymen.
It includes the removal of the torn edges before
stitching the hymen back in place with fine
dissolvable sutures.
What is a hymenoplasty?
Hymenoplasty is a surgery aiming at reconstructing
the broken hymen. The hymen, usually broken after
sexual intercourse, is reconstructed invisibly.
Hymenoplasty is often carried out for individual
convenience or after sexual assault.
What is the hymen?
It’s a thin tissue membrane at the entrance of the
vagina, usually perforated, that separates the
vagina from the outside, or the vulvar area. The
hymen is a thick membranous layer of tissue which
encircles the inside of the vaginal entrance and
allows the escape of menstrual blood. While some
hymens are so elastic that they do not tear even
during intercourse, we know that for most women the
hymen is usually torn at the lower part during first
intercourse, after tampon insertion, or through some
exercises.
Hymen repair is
often performed under local anaesthetic with
sedation, but can also be performed under general
anaesthetic if a patient prefers. This surgery is
minimally invasive and is a day case procedure. The
hymen has a secondary layer that can be sewn up to
cover the torn skin. As it grafts together once more,
the hymen will appear intact. If for any reason this
is not possible then a new hymen can be created from
the lip of the vagina.
Although many women are too embarrassed to raise the
issue with a surgeon, the good news is that an
effective, straightforward solution exists to
correct this condition and can be treated discreetly.
Before the hymen repair
procedure
Two consultations with your surgeon with at least 15
days between each are advised for before a
hymenoplasty for personal convenience.
You will need to stop working during 24 to 72 hours
after the surgery, which is not paid for by health
insurance.
No aspirin-based, anti-inflammatory medication or
oral anticoagulants should be taken during the 15
days preceding the operation to reduce the risk of
bleeding.
Most of the time, the operation is performed under
local anaesthesia.
Local anaesthesia with sedation or general
anaesthesia can also be performed.
Are there any risks
associated with hymen repair?
Hymenoplasty is a relatively safe procedure that
tends to carry few risks and side effects. However
any operation carries a small risk of infection and
prolonged bleeding, as well as those associated with
anaesthetic.
Any complication from the hymen repair surgery
itself is very rare. Occasionally there is a
resulting problem of hymen tightness or hymen over-correction.
This is where the opening becomes narrowed, meaning
that the next act of intercourse will be difficult.
However this rarely causes problems in the long-term
How soon after the
operation can I have sexual intercourse?
We’d recommend at least 30 days between the
operation and having sexual intercourse for the
first time again.
How long does a hymen
repair take?
The procedure takes approximately 30-45 minutes.
After the procedure, you will recover in the capable
hands of our aftercare team. As we are a day-case
facility you can expect your recovery to be complete
within 2 to 3 hours. If your surgeon is happy with
your results, you will be able to be discharged from

may wish to stay locally in our exclusive partner
hotel the day before or after your procedure in
order to be close to their surgeon. Talk to us about
these options if this is for you.
What is involved in hymen
repair? What is the follow-up?
The most common technique consists in stitching the
hymen from the torn edges and closing it. The
surgery in performed on 2 layers in order to
reconstruct firmly and durably the hymen. The
stitches are done with very fine material and resorb
by themselves in about 15 days.
Healing takes about one month. The stitches are
dissolvable and the scar is almost invisible after 1
to 2 months. The hymen is natural, the scars nearly
invisible and hidden in the folds of the hymen. The
operation usually lasts 30 minutes.
The follow-up is light, pains are minor but are well
balanced by the usual pain-killers such as
paracetamol. You will need to stop working during 24
hours.Sports are advised against during 15 days to 3
weeks.
